What hypnosis for pain relief can do for you
Imagine experiencing relief from physical pain. Imagine a life where chronic pain is not ruling your life. Imagine regaining control of your body, being able to do everyday activities that most people take for granted, sleeping better, having more energy, moving better. Imagine being able to stand up from your chair without the agonising pain in your back or the excruciating pain in your shoulders as you make certain movements. Imagine how great you will feel when your body no longer screams at you and the pain is eased. Hypnotherapy for pain management is a natural, drug-free approach that seeks to dismantle the connection between the pain signals and the protection mechanism that the subconscious mind has attached to these signals. Research indicates that 'hypnosis interventions consistently produce significant decreases in pain associated with a variety of chronic-pain problems' (Elkins, Jenson and Patterson, 2007), particularly for conditions such as back pain, arthritis or abdominal pain associated with IBS and gastrointestinal issues. Recent medical trials in medicine, psychiatry and psychology in the US and Singapore have shown that sufferers who receive hypnotherapy 'reported significantly more pain intensity reduction than the control group' and 'significant improvements in pain intensity, pain interference and sleep quality'. Necessary pain and chronic pain
Pain is a message, a warning from the body to the brain that something is wrong. For this reason, it is essential that pain be medically assessed and diagnosed. However, when chronic pain sets in, it can be debilitating and have a devastating impact on all areas of your life. Chronic pain, where pain lasts beyond the time expected for healing following surgery or trauma can be associated with an increased pain experience, not just in the area of injury, but also in surrounding tissue or nerves. Pain Australia Fact Sheet), sometimes without a clear reason. The emotional and mental toll that chronic pain takes is considerable. Interference with daily activities such as sleep, work, exercise, sex and self-care are common, which can, in turn, have a negative effect on personal relationships, social interactions and lifestyle. Although unpleasant, pain is a necessary protection mechanism alerting the brain that the body is at risk. It is a signal to reduce damage to the body, prompting you to pull your hand away if you touch something hot or sharp, for example. However, chronic pain is more complex. When it sets in, the brain can start to react to messages from other parts of the body around the injured/damaged area, making the pain worse and setting up a vicious circle of pain. Chronic pain may occur as a result of the nerves and spinal cord becoming over sensitive. Pain messages may then be amplified, with pain being felt even when there is no injury. The good news is that the very ability of the brain to retrain itself (neuroplasticity), as it does when it reacts to messages from other parts of the body, can also be used to retrain the brain and the mind to reduce pain sensations. Whilst it is absolutely essential to seek medical help for the pain and for its causes to be fully understood, the pain and discomfort that you experience can be minimised, and in some cases, eliminated through hypnotherapy. By working on the relationship between the mind and the body, hypnosis for pain management works with the perception of pain and seeks to reduce pain sensations. When pain causes stress and stress increases pain, hypnotherapy can help to break the cycle and provide much-needed pain relief. |
