study on the effectiveness of group hypnotherapy

to relieve chronic  pain (back pain and arthritis)

As part of a study being conducted on the effectiveness of hypnotherapy to relieve chronic (long-term) pain (back pain and arthritis pain) in groups of sufferers, volunteers are invited to apply to participate in a study to receive a course of hypnotherapy designed specifically to relieve chronic/long-term pain. Depending on the number of suitable applicants, several groups may be run over a longer period. It is anticipated that the next phase/group will start in late August 2016.

If you are suffering from long-term back pain or long-term pain caused by/related to arthritis and would like to be considered for the next test group, please read through the instructions below. If you are suffering from other long-term pain, you may apply, giving as much information as possible, and we will consider whether you may be included in the test group. The selection process includes two steps: 1) an initial screening of suitable applicants will be based on the answers provided to the questionnaire below and 2) a telephone interview for those selected. Selected participants will be contacted by email with further information and to arrange a telephone interview. All applications must be  made through the questionnaire on this page by 7 July 2016. Applicants must complete the questionnaire below in full. Incomplete questionnaires will not be considered.

If you would like to be considered to participate in the test group, please answer all the questions below as accurately as you can and submit your answers by 7 July 2016. There are no right or wrong answers. As the experience of pain varies from person to person, it is essential that you answer all the questions according to your own experience.
Please be as accurate and as detailed as you can about your own situation and experience of pain. You must answer all the questions. If you are selected, you will be contacted by email and by phone to discuss the study and your situation further. A valid email address and phone number must be provided so that relevant information can be communicated.

The selected participants will be offered a program of 4 sessions of hypnotherapy (1 session per week over 4 weeks). The full program will be offered free of charge.
However, there will be a small admin fee of $70 per participant to cover the cost of venue hire for the group sessions, program materials and administration of the study. Sessions will last between 60 and 90 minutes. Groups will be run either in the mornings or in the evenings. Sessions will be run on the same day at the same time every week for 4 weeks (e.g., every Thursday at 6.00pm). Selected participants are required to attend all 4 sessions so that results can be tracked and must allow a minimum of 90 minutes for each session. If you apply to participate in the study and are selected, you commit to attending all 4 sessions of your allocated group.
